Obituary

Fernande “Julie” Allain-DeMattia, born on April 20, 1931, in Lincoln Park, Michigan, passed away at the age of 94 on August 13, 2025, in Riverview, Michigan. Fernande was a cherished daughter of the late Abraham and Juliette Allain and was preceded in death by her siblings, Jeannine, Raymond, and Claudette.

Fernande dedicated her life to nurturing young minds as an elementary school teacher. Beyond her professional life, she found joy in singing, cherished reading her Bible daily, and had a passion for ice skating. A devoted member of Bread of Life an organization who fed the homeless throughout the city of Detroit, Fernande's faith was a guiding light throughout her life. She also loved speaking the French language to all that would listen.

She is lovingly remembered by her family: her son Constant DeMattia and his wife Elizabeth, and her adored granddaughters Olivia, Mia, and Ava. Fernande's warm presence and generous spirit will be greatly missed by her family and friends, with whom she loved spending time.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Pitt-Hopkins Foundation in memory of Fernande. May she rest in peace, surrounded by eternal love and grace.

Condolences

  • My dearest, Aunt Fern. I always enjoyed our conversations and spending time with you. You were never one for small talk, it so often had to be a deep conversation about life. You always had some wisdom to give. I have a very early memory of you teaching me a song in French which sparked a love of language learning in me. I will miss you, Aunt Fern! To God we belong and to God we will return. Jamie McAllister
  • I had Mrs. Demattia in 5th or 6th grade back at Sibley school in Riverview/Trenton. I still sing the French song she taught us. She always looked so beautiful. My deepest condolences. Lorraine Minidis
  • Julie's greatest legacy is the wonderful job she did raising Connie! The smart, respectful, hard-working, adorable little boy she raised has become an extraordinary, loving, handsome, charming man; an awesome, loving father, husband, brother, son and friend. And how fitting that Connie has followed in her footsteps as an acclaimed teacher! May she enjoy her reward in Heaven! Karen DeMattia
  • Aunt Fern had a tremendous impact on my life. I was taught by Dominican nuns which brought me to the inside of her life and her fellow Sisters . She was adventurous, brave and Independent. She entertained us by singing and her favorite song was " Yellow Bird". I loved her spirit and courage. I know she loved God very much. I will miss her. Leslie Allain-Emond
