James “Butch” Edward Cunningham, passed away on June 12, 2025, in Monroe at the age of 86. Born on December 31, 1938, in Rockwood, Butch lived a full and vibrant life dedicated to his passions and his beloved family.
Butch was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. A true outdoorsman, he cherished his time in nature as an avid hunter and gardener. He was happiest working outside, whether tending to his garden or tinkering with tools to fix things. Butch had a talent for storytelling and loved sharing tales with those around him, leaving everyone with a smile and a memory to cherish.
A man of community, Butch was a member of the Flat Rock Elks, where he formed lifelong friendships and shared many fond memories.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Rita Cunningham, and his sisters Sharon Buchs, Alice Kochanski, and Deborah Duchene.
Butch leaves behind his devoted wife, Sherry L. Cunningham, who was his partner and confidant throughout their 62 years of marriage. He is also survived by his children: Jeffrey (Kathe) Cunningham, Sheila (Mel) Bowlds, and Lanae (Chris) Braun, who carry forward his legacy of love and laughter.
His grandchildren, Ryan (Alesha) Cunningham, Kyle (Lisa) Surber-Cunningham, Chad (Sarah) Cunningham, Evan Bowlds, Parker Bowlds, Kayla Braun, Elena Braun, and Landon Braun, were his pride and joy. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Charlotte Cunningham and Rainer Surber-Cunningham, who brought him much happiness.
Butch is also survived by his brother, Mark Cunningham, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories and adventures.
Though he has departed from this world, Butch's spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His love for the outdoors, his knack for storytelling, and his dedication to his family will be remembered fondly. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the natural beauty he so loved.
