Obituary

Thomas Fletcher Downham II, M.D., passed away peacefully on his 83rd birthday, May 21, 2026, in his home. Born on May 21, 1943, Thomas's life was a testament to a deep love for the outdoors and a passion for engaging with the world around him.

Thomas spent his days caring for others. He found joy and solace in medical research along with outdoor activities such as hunting, target shooting, boating, and casual bicycle rides throughout the neighborhood, which connected him with both the land and his cherished community. His appreciation for these pursuits enriched his life and those of the people who shared in them with him.

Known for his adventurous spirit and steady presence, Thomas valued time spent with family and friends above all else. Whether enjoying conversations on the water, sharing stories after a day outdoors, or simply spending quiet moments with those he loved, he created lasting memories through his warmth, wisdom, and genuine appreciation for life. His family will remember him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose guidance, humor, and love left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Dr. Thomas F. Downham, II M.D., earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan in 1970. He subsequently completed an internship in the department of internal medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, followed by a dermatologic residency at Wayne State University in the School of Medicine. After completing his internship, Dr. Downham enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve as a captain in the Medical Corps at the 323rd General Hospital in Inkster, Michigan between 1971 and 1978. He was also active as a resident clinical associate of dermatology research at the VA Hospital in Allen Park, Michigan, between 1973 and 1974. Furthermore, Dr. Downham was board-certified in dermatology and dermatopathology and obtained a medical license in the state of Michigan. A prominent physician for more than 50 years, Dr. Downham specializes in dermatology and dermatopathology. During this time, he excelled in various positions throughout Michigan during his tenure in medicine, including in private practice, as a staff member at Harper Hospital in Detroit and as a senior staff member at Henry Ford Medical Group in Taylor, with which he has been practicing since 1978. Additionally, Dr. Downham began teaching early in his professional career, having been hired as an instructor in the department of dermatology at Wayne State University in the School of Medicine in 1974 before operating as a clinical professor and mentor to the many incredible medical students on campus. Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Downham authored and co-authored dozens of scholarly articles in such prominent publications as the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, the International Journal of Dermatology and the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Attributing much of his professional success to the love and ongoing support of his lovely wife Juliana Downham over the years, he was also honored with several teaching and medical awards, including an Outstanding Professor Award in 1998 and a Certificate of Recognition for Voluntary Teaching in 2014 from Wayne State University.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Juliana, and his devoted parents, Thomas and Eldred Downham. His memory lives on through his loving children: Thomas (Jessica) Downham, Jennifer Downham, and Daniel (Dawn) Downham; his cherished siblings, David (Anne) Downham, Robin (Karen Burr) Downham, and Cindi (Russell) McGaw; and four treasured grandchildren: Charles, Henry, Madison, Stella; and a treasured great grandchild, Mia, along with many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, family and friends who brought him endless pride and happiness.

Thomas will always be remembered for his unwavering passion for caring for others. Whether through his work, his friendships, or the love he gave his family, he never stopped putting the needs of others before his own. His compassion, generosity, and selfless nature touched countless lives, and even in the busiest moments, Thomas never took a break from showing kindness and concern for those around him. His legacy of caring will continue to live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him.
