Obituary
Douglas James Fater, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away on January 10, 2026, at the age of 65 in Flat Rock, Michigan. Born on August 2, 1960, in Trenton, Michigan, Doug spent his life rooted in the community he cherished, growing up and residing in Flat Rock.
Doug was a man of integrity and dedication, known for his honesty, leadership, and fairness—qualities that earned him admiration and respect from all who knew him. He graduated from high school in Flat Rock and immediately began working as a Machine Operator, dedicating his skills to crafting nuts and bolts. Throughout his career, Doug held various roles, consistently demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his work and colleagues.
A lover of the outdoors, Doug found joy in hunting and camping with his family, often embarking on adventures after a long day of work. His wife, Beth, fondly recalls watching her knight in shining armor set up their camper under the stars at night, a testament to his bravery and love for his family. Together, Doug and Beth created their own haven, a sanctuary built on love and mutual respect. Doug was also a member of the 1976 State Championship Football team for Flat Rock.
Doug's devotion to his family was unparalleled. A wonderful husband and father, he took immense pride in being present in the lives of his children, Kyle, Jordyn, and Collin James. Whether coaching little league baseball or cheering from the sidelines at Friday night football games, Doug ensured his family felt loved and supported. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Ansel, Zoe, Hudson, Erikson, Bristol, Wrenley, and Irelynn.
A proud fan of the University of Michigan, Doug's enthusiasm for sports extended beyond fandom. He served as a community pillar, frequently volunteering his time to operate the scoreboard during football games.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Elva; siblings Robert, Gerald, Arlene, and Irene; and brother-in-law Alvin. He is survived by his loving wife Beth; children Kyle, Jordyn (Anthony) Alfredo, and Collin James; his treasured grandchildren; siblings Clare (Bonnie), Robert (Cathy), Mark, Greg (Maureen), Roger (Karen), Rodney (Vickie), Arlene (Pete), Peggy (Byron), and Roberta (Tom); sister-in-law Cathy; and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
Cremation has taken place at "The Witness Crematory", located within Michigan Memorial Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow in Michigan Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Children's, a cause close to Doug's heart.
Doug will be remembered for his kindness, unwavering support, and the warmth he brought into the lives of others. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
