Obituary

Gene Arcus Johnson, affectionately known as Uncle Bobo, born on January 28, 1943, in Vergie, Kentucky, passed away on January 19, 2026, in Taylor, Michigan, at the age of 82. Gene was a man of great wisdom and kindness, whose life was marked by a deep love for the outdoors and an unwavering dedication to those he cherished.

Throughout his life, Gene found joy in hunting and fishing, spending countless hours immersed in nature’s beauty. He held a passion for working outdoors, reflecting his commitment to the land and its bounty. In later years, he also greatly enjoyed trips to the casino with his devoted girlfriend and caretaker, Pat—outings filled with laughter, companionship, and shared enjoyment that meant a great deal to him. Gene’s generous spirit extended far beyond his own family; he was known for always putting others first, never uttering the word “no” when it came to helping those in need.

Gene was married to his beloved wife, Mary, for over 50 years, a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Together, they raised their children with care and devotion. Even in times of illness, Gene was the steadfast caretaker for both his wife and their daughter, Dawn, embodying strength and compassion.

Preceded in death by his parents, William (Myra) Johnson; his brothers Elmer, Everett, Ronny, Claydeen, and Martin; his sisters Maggie, Bertha, Kathreen, and Ermily; as well as his dear wife Mary and daughter Dawn, Gene’s legacy is carried forward by those who survive him. He is survived by his children, Shawn (Sherry) Johnson and Shane (Monica) Johnson, along with his devoted girlfriend and caretaker, Pat. Gene’s spirit lives on in his five grandchildren—Dalton (Sasha) Johnson, Taylor Johnson, Matthew, Ashley, and Lindsay—and six great-grandchildren—Sophie Johnson, Bea, Anthony, Bentley, Noah, and Emma.

A man of intelligence and warmth, Gene was deeply loved by his many nieces and nephews, whom he cared for dearly and who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.

Gene Arcus Johnson’s life was a tapestry woven with love, generosity, and a profound appreciation for the simple joys of life. He leaves behind a family and community enriched by his presence and will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

  • Uncle Bobo, you were always there to help my dad through rough times. You helped me and John with so many things. From installing a hot water heater in our new house, you and my dad arguing back and forth over which way is the best (your way was always better!!) Then going out on our first boat with us to show us all the good fishing spots. I miss those days. Thank you so much for taking care of my dad during his dark days. I am so sad to lose you, but i can't help be happy in my heart that you are back with Aunt Bonnie, Dawn, Granny and Grandpa & all your brothers and sisters! Make sure you keep my dad and uncle martin out of trouble!! Love & miss you!! Dani and John Dani Czapiewski
  • Miss you Uncle Gene and will miss all of those great stories at the factory as well as your wild travel adventures. God bless you. Joe & Dar Lewandowski
  • Gene You served our country , in the Air Force from March 1963 to 1966. During that time you were in basic training in Texas, and you were stationed in Marquette; from there you were sent to Vietnam and Korea. From your high school class of ’24, four of you served in the Air Force, one in the Army and one in the Navy. You were on the baseball team and the track team. You and your best friend Sonny, were at the front of the line to take on any job no matter how tough or strenuous or amount of pay. This was a country where jobs were scarce. After Covid 2020, you enjoyed visiting casinos in different states, especially the ones in Mississippi. I had never been in one before. You liked to explore and see new sites. You wanted to go see the Ark, so we went to Kentucky and spent one afternoon walking through that. Later you wanted to go to St. Louis to see the Arch. You especially enjoyed the Blue Ridge Parkway and the North Carolina mountains. During the long winter months we kept Verizon busy. A few years ago you decided to work on your parents home place near Wilkesville. It had not been touched in 30 years and was all grown up. You did not start on that with a bobcat or a dozer or a crew of men to help you. You had the tall trees removed and got them out of your way and walked in there alone with a pair of clippers in your hand and started on the first briar patch you came to. You worked steadily and methodically in the fresh air and with your memories when the weather allowed. Sometimes you would plan on burning brush, but there might have been a burning ban, so you would bring out a chain saw or weed eater and keep on working. No one can ever fill your shoes. Thanks for the memories. Rest in peace dear friend. From Gladys Morris Gladys Morris
