Obituary
Helen Marie Supplee was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 8, 1924 to Leo and Leona Supplee, the youngest of seven children. She attended school in Detroit, and after graduating from Western High School in 1942, she worked at Ford Motor Company’s Rouge complex during World War II as a secretary.
Her marriage to Richard Kirk in 1949 was a long and happy one with family vacations, tent camping, trailer trips and later trips to Hawaii and Europe. They were spirited bridge players, participating in several leagues throughout the years.
Helen was a proud homemaker. She enjoyed making clothes for herself and her children, as well as home furnishings such as curtains. Her home garden was another source of pride with many hours spent working in the flowerbeds and canning the yield.
As a resident of Trenton for 68 years, Helen was an active member of the community, volunteering with Meals on Wheels, and the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Altar Guild, where she was a member for over 50 years. Her love of singing led her to participate in both the choir at St. Thomas and the Seaway Chorale. Helen was one of the founders of the Trenton Quilt Club, which is still meeting today, spending many hours creating beautiful quilts in the company of good friends made there. She was passionate about preserving the Humbug Marsh, and was blessed to have a neighborhood of good friends.
Helen died peacefully on January 9, 2026 surrounded by loved ones. She had been cared for by a kind and attentive staff at Sunrise on Vernier, her memory care facility.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Richard and is survived by her daughter Paula (Michael) Labadie, sons Timothy (Pamela), Jonathan (Kathy), and Daniel (Mary Kay); grandchildren, Sarah, Lauren, Ryan, Abigail, William and Olivia; Step grandsons Matthew and Marc (Amy) Labadie, and great grandchildren Ava, Colette, Adeline and Dean, and step great grandchildren Carter, Mia, Charlie and Lily.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to the Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy.
